First Time Renting a Scooty in Goa? 10 Things to Check Before Riding

Renting a scooty for the first time in Goa is easy, but a few quick checks before you ride make a big difference. They protect your safety, your deposit and your trip.

Work through these ten points before you leave the pickup spot.

1. Your Licence and Documents

You need a valid driving licence that covers the vehicle category. Carry your ID too. Foreign visitors should check whether an International Driving Permit or translation applies. Requirements can differ between providers and change over time.

Read our guide to documents required to rent a bike in Goa for the details.

2. Helmet Fit

A helmet only protects you if it fits.

  • It should sit snugly, without wobbling when you shake your head
  • The strap should be fastened, and the helmet shouldn’t slide forward or back
  • It shouldn’t squeeze painfully or leave a gap around your head
  • Check for cracks, loose padding and a working strap clip
  • Ask for a second helmet for any pillion

Goa authorities have directed rental operators to provide ISI-marked helmets, according to local media reports. It’s reasonable to ask what you’re being given and to check for the mark.

3. Seat Height and Bike Fitment

Make sure the scooty suits your body.

  • Sit on it: Can you put both feet flat, or at least the balls of your feet, on the ground?
  • Reach the controls: Brakes, throttle and indicators should be comfortable
  • Check the weight: Can you hold it upright, and move it backward and forward?
  • Try the stand and side stand before you ride
  • If it feels too heavy or awkward, ask for a different model

Our guide on Activa vs other scooters in Goa explains how models differ.

4. Vehicle Condition

Photograph or film all sides of the scooty before you leave, including any scratches or dents. Then check:

  • Brakes: front and rear
  • Tyres: tread and pressure
  • Lights: headlight, tail light, brake light and indicators
  • Horn
  • Mirrors
  • Seat lock and storage

Report anything wrong immediately and ask for it to be fixed or noted down.

5. Fuel Level and Fuel Policy

Check how much fuel is in the tank, and how you’re expected to return it. Clarify whether fuel is included or your responsibility.

6. Rental Terms and Deposit

Know what you’ve agreed to:

  • Deposit amount and refund process
  • Late return charges
  • Damage and accident terms
  • Kilometre limits
  • Cancellation rules

Read the Terms & Conditions and Refund Policy in advance. Our pre-booking checklist covers it in more depth.

7. Registration and Paperwork

Confirm the vehicle’s registration papers are with the scooty or available. Rental vehicles operating legally in Goa are registered for rental use. Local media reports describe enforcement against private vehicles being rented to tourists, so use a reputable provider and ask if you’re unsure.

8. Local Rules and Advisories

Goa authorities have emphasised several points for rental riders, according to local media reports:

  • Wear a helmet (riding without one is an offence)
  • Don’t ride triple
  • Don’t ride after drinking
  • Don’t use your phone while riding
  • Don’t perform stunts
  • Don’t ride on the beach
  • Renters have been asked to sign a safety undertaking

Penalty amounts and procedures change, so check current rules locally. Also look out for signage on roads and bridges, since some have restrictions on two-wheelers.

9. Your Own Comfort and Experience

Be honest with yourself.

  • If you haven’t ridden for a while, spend ten minutes in a quiet area first.
  • If you’ve never ridden an automatic scooter, practise starting, braking and turning before joining traffic.
  • If you’re unsure, consider a taxi for busy stretches, and ride only where you feel comfortable.

Goa isn’t the place to learn at busy junctions.

10. Your Plan for the Day

Before setting off:

  • Check the weather. In the monsoon, see our guide to renting a scooty during monsoon.
  • Decide your route and download offline maps.
  • Plan parking and your return time.
  • Plan evening transport. If you’ll drink, use a taxi.
  • Save the provider’s contact number.
