Travel Tips
Getting Around North Goa Without a Car
You don’t need a car to travel around North Goa, and many visitors prefer not to have one. Parking is tight in the busiest areas, and the beach belt’s lanes are narrow. The better question is which combination of transport suits your trip.
This guide focuses on North Goa and compares the main options honestly, so you can decide before committing to a rental. For a statewide view, see our guide to Goa without a car.
Start With Your Plan
Ask yourself:
- Where am I staying? A base near restaurants and the beach needs less transport than a quieter one.
- How many places a day do I want to see?
- Do I hold a valid two-wheeler licence and feel comfortable riding?
- Will I be out late or drinking?
- What’s my budget?
If you’re still choosing a base, our guide on where to stay in North Goa can help.
Your Options in North Goa
Goa Tourism’s transport information covers the main modes. Here’s how they work in practice for the north.
Kadamba (KTC) buses
Goa’s state-run buses connect much of North Goa at low cost, with main hubs at places like Mapusa and Panjim. They suit longer legs between towns and budget travellers. Routes, frequency and timings vary, so check locally. Buses can be crowded at peak times and aren’t ideal for reaching specific beaches or viewpoints.
App-based taxis (GoaMiles, Goa Taxi App and others)
These offer upfront fare estimates and cashless payment, and they serve both airports. They’re a good option for airport transfers, late nights and days you don’t want to ride. Costs add up over many short trips, and availability can vary by area and time.
Traditional taxis
Available at stands, hotels and airports. If a taxi isn’t metered or app-booked, agree the fare before you set off.
Motorcycle taxis (pilots)
A quick, economical way to cover short distances in towns. They’re limited to short hops.
Auto-rickshaws
Less common in Goa than in many other Indian states, but you’ll find them around busier towns and tourist areas.
Ferries
Goa’s river crossings connect areas that are slow to reach by road. In the north, crossings such as the one near Tiracol add to the experience. Schedules and queues vary, so check before you plan around them.
Airport options
Goa has two airports: Dabolim in the south and Manohar International Airport at Mopa in the north. Mopa has an exclusive bus service, among other options, according to local reporting. Check current services for both airports before you travel. If you’d like a scooty ready when you arrive, see scooty rentals near Mopa airport or near Dabolim.
Walking
Within a small area, such as around a single beach and its lanes, walking is often the simplest way to go.
How These Options Work Between Calangute, Baga and Candolim
These three beaches are close together, but traffic on the connecting roads can be slow in peak season and evenings. That affects every mode, since buses, taxis and scooters all share the same roads. Taxi availability and waiting times also vary by time of day.
For short hops within this stretch, many visitors find a scooter the most flexible option, while others walk or use a taxi for specific trips.
Compare Costs Before You Decide
A quick calculation helps more than guessing:
- List the trips you expect in a typical day (for example, stay to beach, beach to dinner, dinner to stay)
- Check estimated taxi fares for each in an app
- Multiply by the number of days
- Compare with a rental plus fuel for the same days
For several days of frequent trips, a rental often works out cheaper. For a trip with only a few journeys, taxis and buses may be enough. Read our rental price guide for deposits, fuel and other extras.
Sample Plans
The couple on a three-day beach trip: A scooty for daytime exploring, app cabs in the evening.
The budget traveller: Buses for longer legs, walking and pilots for short hops, and a one-day rental for a full sightseeing day.
The non-rider: App taxis, buses and ferries, with a base in a walkable area.
A group of friends: A mix of scooties for those who ride and taxis for longer group outings.
When a Scooty Rental Makes Sense
- You’ll visit several places each day
- You want flexibility with timing
- You hold a valid licence and ride confidently
- Your stay is a little way from the beach or restaurants
When You Might Skip It
- You don’t hold a valid two-wheeler licence or aren’t comfortable riding
- You’ll mostly stay in one area
- You expect to drink most evenings
- You don’t want to handle documents, fuel and parking
Combine Modes for Best Results
Many travellers get the best of both: a rental for daytime exploring, a taxi or app cab for evenings, and a bus or ferry for the occasional scenic or longer journey. Keep a taxi app installed even if you rent.

- A valid licence for the vehicle category is a must. See our guide to documents required to rent a bike in Goa.
